Barton H. Hegeler

Barton Hegeler has more than three decades of experience as a civil and criminal trial lawyer. Mr. Hegeler specializes in the representation of the healthcare community including physician, hospital, and healthcare provider malpractice actions involving complex personal injury allegations. He also routinely handles administrative and licensing actions.

Mr. Hegeler has represented the largest health care providers in San Diego including Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation, UCSD Medical Center, Sharp Memorial Hospital, Scripps Memorial Hospital, and Sharp Rees Stealy Medical Group.

Mr. Hegeler started his career as a prosecutor in Kern County California. He specialized in the prosecution of serious and violent crimes including death penalty murder cases. He was one of the founders of the Kern County District Attorney’s Sex Crimes Prosecution Unit.

Mr. Hegeler joined the civil trial firm of McInnis, Fitzgerald, Rees, Sharkey and McIntyre in 1987, and became a Partner in 1992. Mr. Hegeler was a member of the firm’s Health Care Group, and specialized in all aspects of representation of the San Diego health care community.

Mr. Hegeler formed his own law firm (which later became Hegeler & Anderson) in 1995 with an emphasis on providing superior representation through a proactive philosophy and by maintaining a close working relationship with clients.

Mr. Hegeler’s expertise in the field has been by his election to the California Medical Legal Committee, a select group of the state’s finest medical malpractice defense lawyers. He is also one of a small group of lawyers who are Board Certified in medical professional liability.

Barton’s career as a trial lawyer and success as an advocate was acknowledged by his peers through his election in 2012 to Fellowship in the American College of Trial Lawyers, the most prestigious professional organization for trial attorneys in North America. Fellowship in the College is by invitation only, extended after careful and lengthy investigation.

Bart and his wife, Randi have 4 children and are involved in philanthropic activities. The Hegeler’s support St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Riley Children’s Hospital, the American Cancer Society, Donors Choose/San Diego Unified School District, The San Diego Food Bank, Challenged Athletes and other San Diego charitable organizations through Las Patronas. They also support San Diego Children’s Services to fight homelessness. 

Bart is an active outdoorsman and supports wildlife conservation through Ducks Unlimited, Trout Unlimited, B.A.S.S., and the International Game Fish Association.
